Marimekko celebrates the 60th anniversary of UNIKKO in 2024

A powerful emblem of joy and creativity

In 2024, Finnish design house Marimekko celebrates the 60th anniversary of UNIKKO, one of the most recognized print designs in the world of fashion and art. UNIKKO, born from the creative mind of Maija Isola in 1964, has transcended borders to become an international icon. UNIKKO is a symbol of joy and creativity and over the years it has become synonymous with Marimekko's design language. Throughout 2024, the celebrated floral print is more present in Marimekko collections than ever, including limited-edition collectibles, new expressions of the original design, and entirely new prints that have been inspired by the essence of UNIKKO.

UNIKKO was designed by Maija Isola in 1964, and it is not only one of the most recognized Marimekko print designs in the world of art and fashion, but also a historical connection between Marimekko and Ateneum. From 1848 to 1982, the Ateneum Art Museum housed The University of Art and Design of Helsinki. It was this building in which Isola studied from 1946 to 1949, and where Marimekko founder Armi Ratia would first discover her talents. This encounter would mark the beginning of Maija Isola’s remarkable career working as a print designer for Marimekko and creating over 500 unique designs over the period of 38 years. Now, Isola’s most notable print returns to Ateneum as it celebrates its 60th anniversary.

UNIKKO 60th Anniversary Limited-Edition Collectibles

Throughout 2024, Marimekko will introduce UNIKKO in dialogue with surprising, even unexpected ideas and visual cues. As part of its seasonal collections, Marimekko features special limited-edition anniversary collectibles across product categories. Items range from iconic printed dresses to rare collector’s items, including a numbered UNIKKO bowl, of which there are only 60 pieces available worldwide. For Pre-Spring 2024, the UNIKKO print is introduced in two completely new forms: Piirto Unikko (drawing poppy) and Heijastus Unikko (reflection poppy). UNIKKO, in various colors and arrangements, blooms dazzlingly and captivatingly across various products such as outerwear, bags and home items.

UNIKKO-inspired celebrations continue at Copenhagen Fashion Week, where Marimekko reveals its Fall-Winter 2024 collection on 1 February 2024. The Fall-Winter 2024 collection marks the final collection of the UNIKKO 60th anniversary year. More UNIKKO-themed community activations will take place around the world throughout 2024.

Marimekko Spring/Summer 2024 home collection

For Spring/Summer 2024, Finnish design house Marimekko explores the idea of doing more with less. The year 2024 will mark the 60th anniversary of Marimekko’s most iconic and globally recognized print Unikko. Designed by Maija Isola in 1964, the Unikko print has since become an international icon of print design. For Spring/Summer 2024, the iconic Unikko print will be ever present in more ways than ever, including scale, placement, coloring, and techniques.

The Pre-Spring 2024 collection will also feature the second drop of the Syksy glass series designed by Swedish designer Matti Klenell. The new drop features a glass plate and bowl in Klenell’s signature style. The first products of the Syksy glass series were launched in fall 2023.

Seasonal prints & colors

The Spring/Summer 2024 collection references the first foliage of spring as well as nature’s own sophisticated primary colors. As the season evolves, lighter shades of buttery yellows and whites grow in depth and once the summer season starts, the colors are in full bloom with joyful yellow, coral red, leaf green and apricot.

The hero of the Spring/Summer 2024 print selection is of course the Unikko, which comes in multiple scales ranging from mini to abstract. The iconic print is reimagined in completely new forms, which include Piirto Unikko (drawing poppy) and Vesi Unikko (water poppy). To compliment the season's hero print, young print designer Antti Kekki created two completely new prints inspired by Unikko: Siirto and Seppel (wreath). Other seasonal prints include Kukka (flower) by Annika Rimala, Melooni (melon) by Maija Isola, Alku (beginning) by Maija Louekari and Tiiliskivi (brick) by Armi Ratia.

Collection materials

For the Spring/Summer 2024 collection, Marimekko continues to work with organic and recycled materials to reduce the number of conventional materials used in its collections. For instance, the Unikko cosmetic bag and Unikko cushion cover and seating pad are made from 100 percent recycled polyester and in bath products, 79 percent of all the cotton used is organic. Many of the textiles in the Spring/Summer 2024 home collection have been printed on unbleached fabric in Marimekko’s own textile printing factory in Helsinki. Altogether, 42 percent of all cotton used in the home collection is organic.

Spring/Summer 2024 Ready-to-Wear

In 2024, Finnish design house Marimekko celebrates the 60th anniversary of Unikko, one of the most recognized print designs in the world of fashion and art. Unikko, born from the creative mind of Maija Isola in 1964, has transcended borders to become an international icon. The year 2024 will be filled Unikko anniversary celebrations across Marimekko's collections and around the world.

For Spring/Summer 2024, Marimekko merges feminine silhouettes with modern utilitarian workwear, both equally representative of the rich design heritage of the brand. The collection creates a joyful meeting between print, minimalism, and utilitarianism with robust material qualities of washed canvas and heavy cotton-twill combined with breezy cupro and crisp colorful poplin in printed dresses and effortless summer layering styles.

With a new season looming around the corner, the delicate hues of Spring foliage evolve seamlessly into a full bloom of cheerful florals. The seasonal palette creates a meeting point of opposite shades of the spectrum: harmonious tones of Dijon brown, ash grey, endive and antique white are fused with invigorating fuchsia, prism pink, tangerine, chlorophyll green and sodalite. The joyous colors of the season are inspired by the original colorways of the Unikko print, which Maija Isola first introduced in the 1960's.

The Spring/Summer 2024 collection is first and foremost a celebration of the 60th anniversary of Unikko - Marimekko's most recognizable flower. To align with the abstract essence of the Unikko, Marimekko introduces five completely new explorations of abstract floral prints by Finnish artist Antti Kekki: Helakka (bright), Kolmikko (triplet), Malja (toast), Nokturno (nocturne) and Poiminto (pingins). Reflecting Kekki's signature papercut technique, the abstract floral patterns are reminiscent of the essence of Unikko yet highly individual in aesthetic. In addition to the abstract floral patterns of the season, different stripes bring a sense of rhythm to the otherwise abstract expression of the collection. Marimekko's archive lends Maalis (march), Merirosvo (pirate), Patja (mattress) and Vesi (water) by Maija Isola and Tasaraita (even stripe) by Annika Rimala and Piccolo by Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi.

"The year 2024 will mark the 60th anniversary of Marimekko's most iconic and globally recognized print Unikko. The print is celebrated in the Spring/Summer 2024 collection in more ways than ever, including scale, placement, coloring, and techniques. We wanted to reflect Marimekko's design legacy by highlighting two equally meaningful design aspects of Marimekko - the dress as a canvas and bold patterns bringing joy to people's everyday life. The Spring/Summer 2024 collection explores our rich print and color heritage, as well as the happy contradiction happening in the meeting between print, minimalism, and utilitarianism", says

Rebekka Bay, Creative Director at Marimekko.

Collection materials

Marimekko works tirelessly to incorporate more organic and recycled materials in its collections season after season, always keeping longevity in mind. For Spring/Summer 2024, a record number of products have been made from 100 percent organic cotton and all swimwear pieces include 78 percent ECONYL®*. The seasonal bags & accessories assortment also features recycled materials in new products, for instance all pieces in the new knitted bag series are made from 100 percent recycled polyester.

As part of the Spring/Summer 2024 collection, Marimekko introduces the second drop of its closed loop production pilot that was launched for Pre-Fall 2023 in collaboration with Marimekko's Portuguese manufacturing partner Pedrosa & Rodrigues. The drop features new styles made partly using leftover material and cutting waste from Marimekko's own production. Marimekko's long-term vision is that in the future, timeless and sustainable products will be made in balance with the environment, in line with the principles of the circular economy.
